“Books, minds, and umbrellas only work if they are opened!”  This quote spoke volumes at the Greater Mount Zion Church in Brazoria 12th Annual Dream Camp that was held on July 10-14, 2023. The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee was right there to support the camp with a Book Fair. The MLKCC purchased books for grade levels 1st -8th grades that were written by various young-adult authors. On the first day of the camp, each student had an opportunity to choose from the various books in their grade level. Inserted in each book was a book report assignment. This assignment gave the reader an opportunity to read the book, then complete a short book report. If the student turned in his or her book report by that Thursday afternoon, he or she would receive a prize at the final ceremony. On that Friday at the Dream Camp’s Award Ceremony, the MLKCC President, Dorothy Thomas, proudly awarded 68 readers who had completed their books and turned in the book report page with a $10 gift card from either Burger King, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, or Whataburger. The books that were left were offered to the students to choose another to add to his or her library. When GMZ Pastor Roland Hendrix announced there were extra books if anyone wanted one, the committee was delighted when the students rush to the book table to select another book!
