ANGLETON – The Martin Luther King Celebration Committee recently awarded six grants to local community and non- profit organizations.
1. Zion Temple Community Development Corporation Inc. (ZTCDC) – has four areas of focus education, economic development, community development, and social services. The Helping Hands Program aim is to provide support and assistance for people who are having hard times or may be disadvantaged. They aid families experiencing financial difficulties, are a resource for individuals seeking employment, and bring healthcare services to the community. They sponsor job fairs, healthcare fairs, food and school supplies giveaways, and family emergency financial assistance.
Awarded $2,500.00
2. West Columbia Parks and Recreation Board – West Columbia’s only public basketball court is located in Robert Dixon’s Memorial Park. The park is requesting assistance to upgrade its lighting extending usage time and security for area youth and families.
Awarded $4,000.00
3. Mim’s Community Center – unites families and communities in a facility that promotes an atmosphere of peace and prosperity. The Mim’s Community Center is for religious, educational, and social gatherings (regardless of race, creed, religion, or sex). Events include– banquets, funeral repast, family/school reunions, fundraisers, June 19 Celebrations, voting poll, and numerous functions providing community growth and development. By receiving funds from the MLKCC Grant, we will be able to make the center ADA compliant and have signs that make the center more visible and provide street appeal for those passing by on the highway.

4. GMZ Education and Development Center – The GMZ Food Shelf is a Christian, non-profit, community-based organization supplementing food and non-food items to those in need within the West of the Brazos rural community. Hunger has no face and no age limit and can affect anyone in the community. The GMZ Food Shelf helps the roughly one in four who experience hunger and food insecurity in the community. They support an ever-growing number of families in need of hunger relief. The shelf provides a bag of mixed meal food on the second and fourth Thursday of each calendar month.

5. George Washington Carver Alumni Association – Quick Start Program identifies recent high school graduates to assist with being placed into the job market as quickly as possible by receiving certification in skilled worker certifications. They assist students financially and provide readily accessible mentors throughout the program. They also teach interviewing skills, dressing for success, and how to market newly learned skills.

6. Matagorda-Brazoria County Cancer Assistance Program – purpose is to assist persons in Matagorda and Brazoria counties’ victims of cancer to offset some related expenses. Many of the day-to-day expenses of the cancer victims, i.e. the cost of transportation to and from doctor visits, parking, doctor co-pay, and utility bills, etc. are eligible for assistance.
