The Martin Luther, King Jr. Celebration Committee is proud to present it over $28,000 to community organizations in the form of grants. Each organization received a grant of $3,500 for continued service to the community.

George Washington Carver HS Alumni Association
The goal of this program is to continue to identify recent high school graduates and to assist them to find jobs in the local job markets. Jobs include certification in health care related fields, skilled laborers, license jobs and vocational jobs.  This program will continue to assist students in job placement seeking completion of non- traditional trade programs. Scholarships will be provided to students to attend school and complete certification credentials needed to successfully achieve a job such as a welder, phlebotomist, pharmacy tech, LVN, CNA, HVAC Tech, cosmetologist, barber, esthetician, CDL driver, and Vet. Tech.

Zion Temple Community Development Corporation – Helping Hands Program
This program is aimed to provide support and assistance to Brazoria County residents who are having challenging times. The program established in 2020 to provide groceries, school supplies, and clothing for families. This program will host two job fairs and a health fair to help residents find jobs and will establish a data base for companies needing workers in Brazoria County.

COGIC Old Fashion New Inspiration Food Pantry
This food pantry is aimed to alleviate food insecurity and provide essential nutrition to rural families (south of the Brazos River) that lack fresh food options.  This pantry is dedicated to addressing the pressing issue of hunger by providing emergency food assistance. Plans are to increase support of families on a monthly basis. This pantry plans to partner with area churches and libraries to host educational initiatives and food distribution.

Omega Psi Phi-Rho Xi Chapter – Christmas Give Away Project
This project aims to aide limited resource families in Brazoria County by creating a festive holiday event to celebrate Christmas by providing Christmas gifts to children ages 2-18. Children will be recruited from local schools and churches in Brazoria County. The focus is for children who may not be able to celebrate Christmas due to financial constraints.  This project will host an inaugural event with a full course breakfast for the families in Brazoria County. Lots of love, joy, and happiness for the holiday season.

Brazoria County Debutante Committees Incorporated
The Brazoria County Debutante Committee has labored over the past 30 years to encourage and showcase senior girls in Brazoria County along with young men and junior girls they select to be a part of their debut.  It has been the goal of the BCDC to motivate and to encourage these young adults to strive for excellence, to be responsible citizens, and to endeavor to make outstanding contributions in the community.

Many of the young adults who have come through the Debutante program have flourished to become highly productive career goal-oriented individuals as business owners, lawyers, doctors, teachers, and skilled professionals.

Some of them have been willing to give service and monetary contributions as well as provide leadership, back to the community.  This grant will be used to restart the Brazoria County Debutante program to continue to move forward with an investment to maintain that productive pipeline into this community.

MIMS COMMUNTY CENTER
The purpose of this grant is to install outdoor ceiling fans for much needed ventilation in the MIMS Community Center Pavilion. The MIMS Community Center hosts religious, educational, and social gatherings (regardless of race, creed, religion, or sex). Events include banquets, funeral repast, family/school reunions, fundraisers, June 19th Celebrations, voting poll, and numerous functions providing community growth and development.

A.B. Marshall and T.J. Wright Education Association
This grant will be used to conduct a grass-root survey of Southern Brazoria County high school graduates and their fate in the transition into meaningful careers. Significant numbers of students of color struggle in this phase of their careers. The findings will support a full-blown Career Readiness Bridges for At-risk Students proposal application. These findings will be included in applications for local, state, and federal funding opportunities to develop services and support for this most vulnerable segment of our society.

FMBC Community Development Corporation
‘Seniors On The Move’ encourages citizens in the Angleton area, ages 60 and above, to become more active outside the home. The goal is to get individuals out of their homes for a few hours to help fight loneliness and depression. They get to participate in site seeing, field trips, tours and cultural events. These funds will be used to help offset the costs of these trips allowing greater participation

MLKCC recently announced its 2022-2023 Community Grant recipients for cycle 2.

1. S.T.O.P. INC.- a non- profit organization headquartered in Brazoria County. STOP’s mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors through public education, local community advocacy, staff training, school assemblies, peer support groups and parent workshops. The primary focus of S.T.O.P. is to educate as many students and educators on the signs and symptoms associated with teen suicide including mental health and develop peer to peer awareness that could save a life. This program started in 2018 reaching audiences across Brazoria County and Texas.

2. TRUE TO LIFE MINISTRIES-: LEVEL Up Summer Internship Program – a nonprofit organization in Brazoria County. Participants (recent high school graduates through age 25) will receive training and support necessary to gain employment in a four week internship program and receive a scholarship paid to institution of their choice. Participants will explore career interests and continue their education in their selected career path. Job readiness training, interview skills, resume building, customer service training, community service, communication skills improvement will also be addressed during the training.

3. Brazoria County Juneteenth Committee – A non-profit organization in Brazoria County to provide scholarships to local youth to continue their college education in their respective areas. During this celebration a parade and activities will be held to nurture and unify the African American communities in Brazoria County.

4. 20/20 Vision CDC
20/20 Vision CDC will take thirty-five youth (35) youth to a week long summer camp where they will be exposed to an environment that teaches leadership skills, team building, and conflict resolution. Exposure to such positive experiences increase the probability of positive productive young people.

5. Blessing In A Bowl Ministry
Blessing In A Bowl Ministry provides hot meals to individuals and families who are physically, mentally, of financially disabled. They attempt to assure anyone requesting or in need of a food will be fed a nutritious meal.

6. Ladies of Destiny
Ladies of Destiny support and celebrate the scholastic achievements of industrious students who aspire to pursue advanced education at accredited colleges or universities. They also provide services to the homeless, grieving families, senior citizens, and domestic violence survivors.

1. Ladies of Destiny Awarded $5,000.00
Ladies of Destiny (LOD) promote and celebrate scholastic achievements of hard-working youth who aspire to pursue advanced education at an accredited college or university. Awardees are selected based on academic achievement and ability, educational goals, service to others, and leadership. Awards are intended to cover tuition and fees, housing, or any education-related expense.
In addition to scholarships, LOD aids homeless families, senior citizens, domestic violence survivors and other vulnerable populations.

2. Adult & Teen Challenge of Texas Awarded – $5,000.00
Adult and Teen Challenge of Texas provides residential, Christian faith-based recovery programs for men, women, and teens who are struggling with an addiction. They have served Texas for 52 years and operate programs in 10 cities with 400 total beds across the state. Data demonstrates 78% of graduates remain sober and substance free post-graduation confirming graduates are uniquely successful at finding and maintaining freedom from addiction. The Alvin campus serves women in Brazoria County and is constructing a new dormitory to house 40 students and staff. The dorm will double the number of women served and open much needed program space in the existing home for a classroom, offices, and additional staff housing.

3. Charity Achievement Networking & Education Foundation (C.A.N.E.)- Awarded – $1300.00
C.A.N.E. is sponsoring a Financial Literacy Summer Day Camp to enhance the financial literacy of under-appreciated and under-served African-American male youth in the Brazoria County area. The summer camp is featuring interactive learning experiences to teach the building blocks of financial literacy to African-American male youth in the 5th-7th grades.

4. Hope Through Housing- Awarded – $5,000.00
Hope through Housing Foundation is dedicated to preparing at-risk youth for future self-sufficiency so they can earn a living wage. The “Building Bright Futures Program” focuses on at-risk elementary, pre-teen and teen students (ages 5-18) living in low-income affordable housing communities. The children they serve are highly at-risk for repeating the cycle of poverty if there is no intervention. Hope believes education is a key component to equipping low-income youth for future success. MLKCC funds will be used to bolster much-needed after-school programming at Lexington Square, low-income affordable housing community in Angleton.

5. S.T.O.P. Inc.- Awarded – $5,000.00
The purpose of S.T.O.P. Inc. is to educate students in Brazoria County regardless of age, race or background about the signs and symptoms associated with teen suicide and to develop a peer awareness that could save their lives. These efforts will reduce suicidal behavior of our children and leave a message of “HOPE, YOU ARE NOT ALONE, YOU ARE LOVED”. This project will be implemented by conducting assemblies at local school districts, conduct staff & teacher training, and peer support sessions. Anti-bullying tactics will also be addressed. This program will also address Crisis/Mental Certification training for school staff members.

6. Pearland MLKCC- Awarded- $2,500.00
The Pearland MLKCC awarded to assist with Juneteenth celebration in the Pearland Area planned for this year. This event will educate, inform, and inspire our community of Pearland to learn, remember and celebrate the significance and importance of Juneteenth. This event will seek to keep action and discussion moving forward regarding equality of all people.

7.New Jerusalem Baptist Church Seasoned Saints Ministry- Awarded- $3,000.00
The purpose of this ministry is to provide lunch, entertainment, and fellowship for elderly residents (65 years+) and disabled county residents two times a month. Take-home snacks will also be provided to supplement their diet during the month. They will also provide health related information to improve the elderly quality of life.

8. Brazoria County NAACP- Awarded- $3,000.00
This nonprofit organization will promote a family friendly Juneteenth event in the Pearland area of Brazoria County. Their goal is to promote a voter registration drive, give community updates from city and county officials and increase membership of the local NAACP chapter.

9. Women of Destiny Ministries- Awarded – $3,000.00
This ministry will assist by providing financial support to residents in Brazoria County through scholarships to deserving area youth, provide assistance to cancer patients that need transportation to doctors and hospital visits, provide food, clothing and bill assistance to needy families in the area, host a mental health awareness forum planned to help educate residents on mental illness and a weekly “Speak your Mind” session planned for residents. This Ministry is devoted to ministry in service to all mankind in unity and love.

ANGLETON – The Martin Luther King Celebration Committee  recently awarded six grants to local community and non- profit  organizations.

Awarded $2,500.00

2. West Columbia Parks and Recreation Board – West Columbia’s only public basketball court is located in Robert Dixon’s Memorial Park. The park is requesting assistance to upgrade its lighting extending usage time and security for area youth and families.
Awarded $4,000.00

3. Mim’s Community Center – unites families and communities in a facility that promotes an atmosphere of peace and prosperity. The Mim’s Community Center is for religious, educational, and social gatherings (regardless of race, creed, religion, or sex). Events include– banquets, funeral repast, family/school reunions, fundraisers, June 19 Celebrations, voting poll, and numerous functions providing community growth and development. By receiving funds from the MLKCC Grant, we will be able to make the center ADA compliant and have signs that make the center more visible and provide street appeal for those passing by on the highway.
Awarded $2,500.00

4. GMZ Education and Development Center – The GMZ Food Shelf is a Christian, non-profit, community-based organization supplementing food and non-food items to those in need within the West of the Brazos rural community. Hunger has no face and no age limit and can affect anyone in the community. The GMZ Food Shelf helps the roughly one in four who experience hunger and food insecurity in the community. They support an ever-growing number of families in need of hunger relief. The shelf provides a bag of mixed meal food on the second and fourth Thursday of each calendar month.
Awarded $4,800.00

5. George Washington Carver Alumni Association – Quick Start Program identifies recent high school graduates to assist with being placed into the job market as quickly as possible by receiving certification in skilled worker certifications. They assist students financially and provide readily accessible mentors throughout the program. They also teach interviewing skills, dressing for success, and how to market newly learned skills.
Awarded $3,000.00

6. Matagorda-Brazoria County Cancer Assistance Program – purpose is to assist persons in Matagorda and Brazoria counties’ victims of cancer to offset some related expenses. Many of the day-to-day expenses of the cancer victims, i.e. the cost of transportation to and from doctor visits, parking, doctor co-pay, and utility bills, etc. are eligible for assistance.
Awarded $3,000.00
